Contractors in the UK have increased not only in numbers but in their contributions to the UK’s economy. A recent Self Employment Review by Julie Deane OBE has drawn the conclusion that contractors need more government support to relieve some of the disadvantages contractors experience.
The Self Employment Review from the Department for Business, Skills and Innovation, calls for contractor benefits to be closer aligned to those in permanent employment. There are now around 4.6 million self employed operating in the UK, most of which value the recommendations made.
Some employee benefits such as, statutory maternity pay, are only available to employees who satisfy the criteria, which most contractors do not satisfy. The review covers a wide range of benefits, which most self employed and contractors feel should be more available to them alongside employees, in the hope that the government takes notice.
